Olympics 2004

OK, I know I don't "do sport" as a rule, but I can't believe no one has posted about the Olympics on here. Even a sport-phobe like myself got drawn in. So what was your best moment? Matthew Pinsent getting a 4th gold medal by a whisker? Kelly Holmes achieving a double gold? The crowd booing a low score for a spectacular routine in the men's gymnastics until the adjudicators raised it? Young Khan from Bolton belting seven shades out of the opposition? Our 4 x 100m relay team winning? C'mon, share your thoughts!

Perhaps we were so engrossed, Linda.

Apart from Kelly Holmes, and the look on her face when she won the 800 metres, that`s my lasting memory.

Must admit to watching a lot of Olympics, was it because I was in the Olympian House when I went to school in Yewlands Drive? We were RED, the Athenians were GREEN, the Corinthians were YELLOW, and the Spartans were BLUE.

To the Mens Marathon and what to do with the Mad Irishman - put him on a plane to Brazil and parade him through the streets of the roughest quarter, and let them deal with him.

What a relief we will not be hearing the awful voice of a certain North Eastern commentator, who I won`t name, for a while. Still we have to go through the plaudits and inquests now. I can always watch another channel.

A last note - it was good to hear the Lancashire accent of the chap looking after Amir Khan, he did a good job.

Another comment - I feel the organisational side of the Athens Olympics left a fair bit to be desired. The gymnastics judging was so dubious even the usually impartial BBC commentators were not concealing their feelings. Then there were the appeals allowed, disallowed, allowed again till no one knew where they were up to - I'm thinking in particular of the show jumping where our chap didn't find out he'd won until he was back home and competing in a gymkhana (sp?) in the Midlands! Weren't there appeals in the swimming too? But the most ridiculous was the stunning lack of security in the marathon, which allowed that idiot to not only push the leader into the crowd, but detain him there for what seemed like several minutes (was probably only 60 seconds) and no sign of police or other authority figure coming to the rescue. I think the spectators freed the runner in the end.

And apparently the marathons were timed to begin while conditions were still too hot for long distance running to appease US TV schedulers...... sigh!
